......exploring genetic potential
From our research
programmes, we have also developed some basic genetic philosophies which we
feel are important and to which we adhere:
Thoroughbred breeders may be considered to be successful if their failure rate is less than that of others. Why is the failure rate is high? Why, when solely traditional methods are employed, are breeders frequently disappointed? Why, when an organisation has access to the finest mares and stallions, does the genetically unexpected still frequently occur? More importantly, why are breeders considered to be successful if they produce a handful of group winners from hundreds of crosses in a lifetime?
Using our DNA-based analyses or databases constructed from our research, we are able to determine whether horses already conform to these ideals and thereby assess their racing potential or stamina leanings. Similarly, we are also able to use these tools to structure breeding programmes to greatest effect. Their application and our services are described in ‘Standard Services’ and Bespoke Services’. The results of our most recent patented research are now published in the international scientifically peer-reviewed journal MITOCHONDRION. We believe that the represent a major breakthrough and change the way in which we should assess racing and breeding potential. Naturally, we believe
that some genes and metabolic or physiological processes are more important
than others in their contribution towards a successful racing or breeding
thoroughbred. We also know that breeding and racing theories considerably vary
in their validity and that lessons learned from outside of the thoroughbred
world also have enormous application. We have developed our
genetic tests and databases using a programme of strategic research and
development on the most appropriate genetic systems affecting racehorse
performance. We have also used our experience in the spheres of population
genetics, molecular genetics and racing to ‘borrow’ ideas used in
connection with other species for application to the genetic improvement of
the thoroughbred. Most importantly, many of these developments
allow us to provide genetic tests or advice to breeders, owners and trainers
of horses.
We do not use extended,
multi-generation pedigree analysis to arrive at our conclusions. We base our approach primarily on:
